Who it's for

For the people who can see what's slowing things down

Every site has someone who knows where the time goes: the queue at goods-in, the machine that always needs a restart, the form that gets filled in twice. This apprenticeship gives them the methods to prove it with data, fix it and make the fix stick.

Your apprentice learns to identify inefficiencies, put sustainable improvements in place and help build a culture of continuous improvement across the organisation. Every project they work on is one of your live business challenges.

1

Find the waste

Map how work really flows, collect the data and pinpoint where time, materials and money are being lost.

2

Fix the cause, not the symptom

Use structured problem solving to get to the root of recurring issues, then plan and implement the change with the people affected.

3

Make it stick and count it

Standardise the new way of working, keep it under review and quantify the savings so the business case is clear.

The "with AI" part

Less time wrangling data, more time improving

Improvement work runs on evidence, and gathering it can swallow days. Alongside the core standard, your apprentice learns to use everyday AI tools to sort and summarise data, test their thinking and produce clear documents, while the analysis and decisions stay theirs.

Faster data analysis

Cleaning and summarising downtime logs, defect records or pick rates, then building the Pareto charts and trends that show where to focus.

Better root cause thinking

Using AI to challenge a fishbone or 5 Whys and suggest causes that might have been missed, then confirming them on the shop floor.

Standard work in hours, not weeks

Drafting A3s, standard operating procedures and training materials quickly, ready to check and agree with the team.

Responsible use runs through all of it: what data must never go into an AI tool, how to verify what it produces, and how to work within your organisation's data protection and IT policies.

End-point assessment

How the apprenticeship is assessed

At the end of the programme an independent assessment organisation checks that your apprentice can do the job to the standard. The centrepiece is an improvement project completed in your workplace, with a business benefit you confirm in writing.

Improvement project

A project report on a real improvement in your business, presented to an independent assessor and followed by questions.

Professional discussion

A structured conversation with the assessor, underpinned by the log of evidence built up during the programme.

Knowledge test

A short multiple-choice test covering the improvement methods and principles learned on the programme.

Government apprenticeship funding is available to businesses based in England. For many employers the course costs nothing, and the apprentice never pays.

We handle the funding paperwork for you, from eligibility checks through to the application.

Your situationWhat you pay
Levy-paying employerPaid from your apprenticeship levy funds. If your levy balance runs short, the government co-invests and you pay a share of the remainder.
Non-levy, apprentice aged 16–24Usually fully funded, subject to eligibility.
Non-levy, apprentice aged 25+You pay 5% (£200) and the government funds the other 95%.

Funding depends on eligibility and the rules in force when your apprentice starts. Check your funding position or read our funding guide, and we'll confirm exactly what applies to you.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this only for manufacturing businesses?

No. Lean methods began in manufacturing, but the apprenticeship suits any organisation with repeatable processes, including warehousing, logistics, engineering, service operations and back-office teams.

Can we put existing staff on this apprenticeship?

Yes. Many employers choose someone who already knows the processes well, such as a team leader, operator or quality technician. There is no upper age limit, as long as the apprenticeship teaches them substantial new skills.

How is the AI element different from the standard apprenticeship?

The qualification is the national Improvement Technician Level 3 standard. NTG adds practical, responsible use of AI tools throughout the programme, mainly to speed up data analysis and documentation. It does not change the qualification or how it is assessed.

What will it cost us?

The course value is £4,000. Levy payers use their levy funds. Non-levy employers usually pay nothing for apprentices aged 16 to 24, and 5% (£200) for apprentices aged 25 and over. Use our funding checker or call us to confirm your position.

Will the apprenticeship pay for itself?

That is the aim. The assessed project must deliver a business benefit that you confirm in writing, and the final step of the programme is quantifying the savings, so you can see the return in your own figures.

How is the apprenticeship assessed?

Through an independent end-point assessment: a report and presentation on a workplace improvement project with questioning, a professional discussion underpinned by a log of evidence, and a short knowledge test.
