The Government Will Fund Your Employees' Marketing Training.
Most Businesses Have No Idea.

If your team is doing marketing without a formal qualification — or if you have been paying for marketing courses out of your own budget — stop. There is a better way, and it is largely government-funded. This guide explains everything.

By Tina Lavery, NTG Training · Published May 2025 · 10-minute read · Updated regularly

✦ Quick Answer

Yes — UK employers can access up to £12,000 of government-funded marketing training for existing employees through the apprenticeship system. This is not a grant or a competition. It is a standard government entitlement available to almost every employer in England. The employee continues working in their normal role. The training runs alongside the job. The qualification achieved — assessed by the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT — is nationally recognised and respected across the industry. Contact Tina Lavery at NTG Training to check your eligibility today.

The Problem With How Most Businesses Fund Marketing Training

A junior team member is handling your social media. She has never been trained. She learns by trial and error, watching YouTube, and mimicking things she has seen other brands do. She is enthusiastic, she is trying her best — but she is operating without any framework, any measurement discipline, or any awareness of the wider channel strategy she is supposed to be part of.

Sound familiar?

Now here is the version most businesses do not know is possible. That same person — already on your payroll, already doing marketing work — could be enrolled on a fully accredited, largely government-funded marketing programme. She would continue in her role. She would bring new skills to work every single week. Fifteen months later, she would be a BCS-accredited, qualified marketer. And you would have paid, in most cases, a fraction of what a single training course costs.

This is not a niche workaround. This is the UK government's Apprenticeship Levy and co-investment system — and it is one of the most underused employer benefits in the country.

Who in Your Team Is Eligible for Funded Marketing Training?

The eligibility criteria are simpler than most employers expect. Your employee is likely eligible if they meet all of the following:

  • They work in England and are employed by you for at least 30 hours per week
  • Their role is — or is moving towards — a marketing-related function
  • They do not already hold a qualification at the same or higher level in a similar marketing subject
  • They have the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the programme

That is it. Age does not matter. Tenure does not matter. Whether they came to you as a school leaver or have been on the team for a decade — the door is open.

💡 The Most Commonly Overlooked Employees

The people most likely to qualify for funded marketing training are often the ones businesses are least likely to put forward. They include: the PA who manages all the social media posts; the office manager who writes the email newsletter; the sales executive who creates LinkedIn content; the customer service team member who handles community management. If their job involves marketing activity and they do not have a marketing qualification — they are eligible.

What Does Funded Marketing Training Actually Look Like?

Funded marketing training through the apprenticeship system is not a weekend course or a stack of online modules your employee completes in their lunch break. It is a structured, 15-month professional development programme that runs alongside their normal job.

Here is how it works in practice:

1

Your employee enrols — they do not leave their role

The apprenticeship runs alongside normal employment. Your employee stays in their job, continues reporting to you, and keeps delivering their usual responsibilities throughout the programme.

2

80% of their time stays in your business

The 80/20 split is a legal requirement. Eighty percent of working hours are spent doing their job in your business. The remaining 20% — typically equivalent to one day per week — is dedicated to structured learning managed by NTG Training.

3

They learn. They apply. You see results in weeks.

Unlike traditional training courses, apprenticeship learning is applied immediately to real work. The new skills your employee picks up each month get deployed in your business the following week. You see a return on the training investment from the very start.

4

NTG Training manages everything

Progress reviews, EPA preparation, ESFA compliance — all of this is managed by NTG Training. We keep you updated without making the programme feel like extra admin on your plate.

5

Your employee completes with a nationally recognised qualification

After approximately 15 months, your employee sits their End-Point Assessment. Pass, and they hold a Level 3 or Level 6 qualification assessed by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT — a credential recognised across the entire marketing industry.

Which NTG Programme Is Right for Your Employee?

NTG Training delivers three funded marketing programmes, covering entry-level marketers through to experienced managers. Here is a clear guide to help you match the right programme to the right person.

Programme Right for Funding band Duration Qualification
Multi-Channel Marketer L3 Junior/mid marketers covering SEO, email, social, PPC, campaigns £11,000 ~15 months Level 3, BCS assessed
Content Creator L3 Content, social, video and creative production roles £12,000 ~15 months Level 3, approved EPAO

How Is the Training Actually Funded?

There are two routes, depending on the size of your business. Both result in the vast majority of training costs being covered — not by you, but by the government.

🏢 Levy-Paying Employers
(payroll over £3 million)

  • You already pay into the Apprenticeship Levy each month
  • That money sits in a digital levy account and can only be spent on apprenticeships
  • Unspent funds expire after 24 months
  • Funding your employee's training costs you nothing extra — it comes from your existing levy pot
  • NTG Training helps you set up and manage your account on the ESFA portal

🏠 Non-Levy Employers
(payroll under £3 million)

  • Government co-invests alongside you to cover training costs
  • Apprentice aged 16–21: government pays 100% of training
  • Apprentice aged 22+: government pays 95%, you pay 5%
  • 5% of £11,000 = £550 over 15 months
  • You continue paying your employee's normal salary

✅ Apprenticeships vs. Traditional Training Courses — The Real Comparison

A one-day marketing workshop from a reputable provider: £500–£1,500. Result: your employee learns some things, may or may not apply them, gets no qualification, and you have to fund the next one yourself.

An NTG Marketing Apprenticeship: £0–£550 employer contribution for most non-levy businesses. Result: 15 months of structured, applied learning; a nationally recognised qualification assessed by BCS; measurable productivity gains from month one; and a far more loyal, engaged employee at the end of it.

The Retention Argument — Why This Is Also Your Best Recruitment Strategy

Marketing talent is hard to find and expensive to replace. The average cost of replacing a mid-level employee — when you factor in recruitment fees, lost productivity, and onboarding time — is estimated at six to nine months of that person's salary.

Employees who receive employer-funded professional development are measurably more likely to stay. They feel valued, they can see a future within the business, and the qualification they are working towards gives them a reason to be patient about career progression.

Beyond retention, there is the brand loyalty effect. When a business invests seriously in someone's development, that person becomes an advocate — internally and externally. They attract better candidates through word of mouth. They create a culture of learning that makes the team around them more effective.

Funded marketing training is not just a cost-saving measure. It is a talent strategy.

The Objections We Hear — And the Honest Answers

Most employers who have not yet explored funded marketing training have one of three concerns. Here is the truth about each of them.

"I can't spare the time — we're too busy."

The 20% off-the-job requirement is real, but it is scheduled around your business. NTG Training works with you to structure learning in a way that minimises operational disruption. Most employers report that the productivity gains from the programme quickly outweigh the time invested. Busy businesses often benefit most, because the new skills are deployed into real, high-pressure work immediately.

"My employee won't want to do more studying."

In our experience, the opposite is almost always true. Most employees who are told that their employer is going to fund a professional qualification — one that is nationally recognised and assessed by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT — respond with genuine enthusiasm. It is a tangible, valued investment in their future. The conversations to be careful about are the ones where the employee finds out about it second-hand, or where it is presented as an obligation rather than an opportunity.

"We're not big enough to do apprenticeships."

There is no minimum size requirement. NTG Training works with sole traders, micro businesses, SMEs, and large corporates. The funding rules apply equally regardless of headcount. If you have one employee who is doing marketing, they may well be eligible. Speak to Tina Lavery and she will confirm your eligibility in a single conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get government funding for marketing training for existing employees?

Yes. Through the UK apprenticeship system, employers can access up to £12,000 of funded marketing training for existing employees. The employee must be in a marketing-related role and must not already hold a qualification at the same or higher level in the same subject. Contact Tina Lavery at NTG Training to confirm eligibility.

Does my employee have to stop working while on the programme?

No. Apprenticeships are work-based qualifications. Your employee continues in their normal role throughout. They dedicate 20% of their working hours (roughly one day per week) to structured off-the-job learning, managed by NTG Training. The remaining 80% of their time is in your business doing their job.

What is the difference between an apprenticeship and a traditional training course?

A traditional training course is typically a short, expensive intervention with no guaranteed outcome or qualification. A marketing apprenticeship is a 15-month structured programme that results in a nationally recognised Level 3 or Level 6 qualification assessed by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Skills are applied to real work throughout — not just in a classroom setting.

What qualifications can my employees achieve?

NTG Training delivers three funded marketing programmes: the Multi-Channel Marketer L3 (£11,000 funding band, BCS assessed), the Content Creator L3 (£12,000 funding band), and the Marketing Manager L6 (£14,000 funding band, degree-equivalent). All result in nationally recognised qualifications.

How much will this cost my business?

Levy-paying employers (payroll over £3m) pay nothing extra — training costs come from the existing levy account. Non-levy employers pay 5% of training costs for employees aged 22+, or nothing for employees aged 16–21. The employee's salary continues as normal and is your business cost throughout.

What happens after the employee completes the programme?

They continue in their role — but as a qualified, BCS-accredited marketing professional with 15 months of structured development behind them. Many employers use completion as an opportunity to formalise a promotion or updated job description. Some go on to enrol the same individual on the Marketing Manager L6 as a natural next step.
