About You

I joined the organisation three years ago after previously working within adult education. Before entering the business, I studied Film Production at university, which gave me a strong creative background and an interest in visual communication, although I had not fully utilised those skills professionally before joining the company.

Within my current role, I support a range of marketing, communication and customer engagement activities across the business. Working as part of a small team has allowed me to gain exposure to multiple areas of marketing and contribute to a wide variety of projects, including customer communications, event planning, branding and internal engagement initiatives.

Why You Chose to Do an Apprenticeship

I chose to complete the apprenticeship because I wanted to gain a much deeper understanding of marketing strategy and the reasoning behind business decisions.

Although I was already involved in marketing-related activities, I often found myself asking why certain approaches were used, why specific audiences were targeted and how marketing decisions were made. I wanted to move beyond simply carrying out tasks and instead fully understand the strategic thinking behind them.

The apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to independently research competitors, customer behaviours and target audiences, while also helping me understand how marketing supports wider business objectives.

What You Learned During the Programme

The programme significantly improved my understanding of both strategic and practical marketing processes. Some of the key areas I developed included:

  • Customer personas and audience profiling
  • Marketing plans and campaign structure
  • Customer engagement strategies
  • Internal communications
  • Data analysis and reporting
  • Brand positioning and customer targeting

One of the most valuable areas for me was learning how to create and apply customer personas. Understanding the differences between audiences and how communication styles should change depending on the customer has had a major impact on the way I approach marketing activity.

I also gained a much clearer understanding of how marketing campaigns are planned, measured and reviewed to support business growth and improve customer engagement.

How You Applied This Knowledge in the Workplace

The apprenticeship has allowed me to apply a much more strategic approach to the work I carry out within the organisation.

For example, understanding customer personas has helped shape how we communicate with different audiences across the business. We identified that our customer base includes both senior decision-makers and operational teams working on-site, and these audiences require very different approaches in terms of communication, events and marketing materials.

This knowledge has influenced the way we create catalogues, customer events and marketing campaigns. For example:

  • Marketing materials are designed to suit practical on-site use
  • Corporate events are tailored differently depending on the audience
  • Communications are written in a more targeted and customer-focused way

I have also used the knowledge gained through the programme to support the development of internal newsletters and communication initiatives aimed at improving engagement across the business.

What Impact Has It Had on You and Your Organisation?

The apprenticeship has given me much greater confidence in my role and improved my understanding of how marketing contributes to wider business success.

I now feel more confident contributing ideas, planning marketing activity and understanding how communication strategies influence customer engagement. The programme has also helped me become more organised and strategic in my approach to projects.

For the organisation, the impact has included more targeted communication, stronger customer engagement and improved internal communication processes. Marketing activity is now more tailored to specific audiences, helping the business communicate more effectively with both customers and employees.

The apprenticeship has also supported the creation of new initiatives, including internal newsletters and customer engagement campaigns that strengthen relationships across the organisation.

Benefits to Your Future Career

Working within a smaller team has allowed me to gain experience across multiple areas of marketing, which has helped me identify areas I would like to continue exploring in the future.

The apprenticeship has provided me with a broad range of transferable skills that can be applied across many industries and roles. It has also opened my eyes to the variety of career paths available within marketing and communications, from content creation and branding through to strategic planning and audience engagement.

Most importantly, the programme has given me the confidence to continue learning, developing and progressing professionally.
