About the Role:

As a Controller (planner/dispatcher) you will be providing a vital service as a liaison between our ambulance control centre, our operational staff, patients and Health Care Professionals. This is an exciting opportunity to join a knowledgeable team and we are looking for a motivated, logical thinking, caring, innovative and enthusiastic person to join us.

Previous experience of working within a Patient Transport Service control room or similar environment is preferable. We are looking for someone to work a varied shift pattern, Monday to Sunday covering a 24-hour rota.

Your duties will include:

  • Planning and controlling of daily ambulance journeys transporting medically eligible patients to and from NHS healthcare facilities.
  • Controlling a complex operation consisting of over 25 ambulances delivering 300+ patient journeys per day.


  • Experience of working in similar transport control environment, using logistical and planning skills
  • Good telephone manner
  • Be customer service focused and able to effectively handle sensitive situations
  • Have a good geographic knowledge of the county
  • Be able to stay calm under pressure
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Working effectively as a part of the team

Work Pattern

Monday – Sunday

3 day on and 3 day off shift patterns with aggregated hours of 37.5 a week

10-hour shifts on a 24 hour rota.

Rate of pay

£6.50 an hour (plus enhancements for unsociable hours)

£243.75 a week

The potential exists for this role to develop into a full-time position for the right candidate and the company has a history of promoting from within.


Your will be studying a Business Administration apprenticeship at level 2

What does the Apprenticeship Cover?

The course lasts 12 months. During this time the learner will be expected to complete their Level 2 Business Administration Diploma (RQF) Throughout the qualification, the Apprentice will receive regular 1-1 sessions and support from their Tutor.

Topics covered include communication in a business environment, principles of business document production and information management, managing personal performance and development, preparing text from notes using touch typing, maintaining and issuing stationery and supplies, administering the recruitment and selection process and contributing to the development and implementation of an information system.

Learners will complete training and activities to cover the mandatory units below. These are completed through workbooks, practical sessions, observations and professional discussions. Learners will then complete optional units dependant on their job role.

Unit 3: Principles of business document production and information management

Unit 4: Understand employer organisations

Unit 5: Manage personal performance and development

Unit 5: Develop working relationships with colleagues
